Text neck: how smartphones are damaging our spines

 http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/shortcuts/2014/nov/24/text-neck-how-smartphones-damaging-our-spines
I've just read an article called "Text neck: how smartphones are damaging our spines". This article was published in The Guardian. It was written by Homa Khaleeli. I think this article is very actual for us, because everyone has a smartphone and spends too much time with it.
The author of the article gives us the results of the new research carried out by a US doctor. He says that its really hard for our neck always look down on the phone and it can lead to damage. It can cause head pain or neck pain. Also Homa Khaleeli gives us a graphic. It shows us how to keep the head right and wrong. The best way is to look forward, not drop your chin on to your chest. We can see some pieces of advice from Sammy Margo from the UK’s Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. She advices people to call each other but not to write so many messages. In the end of the article the author says "It is not the first time we have been warned about the dangers of texting". And I do agree with this statement. Texting damages our eyes too.
But today we can't imagine our life without smartphone and people will use it anyway. We don't afraid of this harm until we get it. I think it's almost normal to have a health problems when you are 45, but when children have all this deseases from their smartfpones it's awfull. They get tired of looking down in a copybook or in a book, but then they look in their phones and tired more. So, I think, parents shouldn't buy smartphones to their little children.
As for adults,  they should decide for themselves - to stop text messages or not. I won't. It's very useful and fast. Also, the spine of grown-up people is not so weak. Nothing wrong in itself with bending forward to use a smartphone, laptop, tablet or read a book. The problem comes in because so many people, especially young ones, aren't doing anything much else, for at least several hours a day.
So, how many hours a day do you use your smartphone? Does it hurt you? Will you stop texting because of this researces?

  1. Hmmm...this very research makes me thinking about my health. But for a second. 'Cause I personally think that everything damages us everyday! Even water from our taps or books which we read sometimes for many hours! Absolutely EVERYTHING HURTS US!!! For instance, our study =)
I do agree with your opinion that adults have strong and formed bones that's why it's not so terrible and frightful.
What can I say about myself? I use my smartphone often - I'd say every 10 or 20 minutes, 'cause I need to communicate with friends or with my workplace and etc. It doesnt' hurt me (I hope) and I'm not going to refuse from my mobile phine.
Besides, we should take for granted that parents must somehow avoid using smartphones by their little children.

  2. The topic is really very actual, smartphones fill our lives and the majority of us can't imagine even a day without our gadgets. Moreover, I’m in this “majority”. Sometimes I catch myself at the thought that I spend all my free time in the phone, chatting with my friends, reading news and watching different photos and videos, that I’m addicted to it.
Smartphones change our life completely by facilitating it. But, at the same time, they are harmful for us, as you’ve written. I do agree with you and Alexej. Especially with the idea of influence of these technologies on children. That’s a real disaster! They see nothing besides the Internet! So, in my opinion, parents should bring up their children without these gadgets in order they could develop properly and have less problems with health in future.
To conclude, I don’t think I can turn my gadgets down after this research, but it makes me think how people lived, for example, 20 years ago, when only rich ones have cellphones. Nevertheless, they managed to get acquainted, to gather somehow, so why couldn’t we?

  3. It is a very interesting article. The problem that you have covered is very actual one. Nowadays people can't imagine their lives without using smarphones but nobody cares about their health. Smartphones are a part of our lives. The research is incredible but I think our generation won't be able to stop using the telepnones, unfortunately. And it is awful because we are addicted from the telephones.
So, as for me, I use my smartphone every day and even every hour. But recently I've started to realize that I had a pain in my neck, of course I didn't care about it. But when I read your article everything fell into place. But unfortunetly I can't give up using my gadgets.

  4. This very article gives all of us food for thought. People take technologes for granted. They got used to modern gargets so much that they don't see anything around, they are completely dip into virtual reality. And it scares! We don't notice how much time we spend with smartphones. It's high time to make a stop and think about it. Of course, I agree with the others and with Alexey's phrase "everything hurts us", it's very true. But, nevertheless, we should be careful and pay more attention to our health. Everybody should know when to stop. Control youself or your device will take control over you! Sometimes we can do without smartphones but we start using them just out of habit. It's a kind of addiction and most of us are addicted. Especially children are tremulous to the influences of modern technologies. That's why parents should keep an eye on them and strictly limit the time of using gardgets. Otherwise consequences will be terrible.
As for me, I use my cellphone quite often. It doesn't hurt me cause I don't keep it in my hands all the time but use it wisely only as necessary.

  5. The article really covers a very 'pain-in-the-neck' problem of today: the usage of different digital devices. I personally think that only because of the sole newspaper article I can't stop using my tablet in order to text people and surf the Internet, but, in fact, I'd like to pay more attention to my health and somehow reduce the amount of time I spend on my gadgets. Probably a 15-minute walk instead of playing a mobile game would do much better, and it's, actually, a very beneficial thing both for physical and mental health.
Unfortunately, it's impossible to reject the usage of smartphones, laptops, tablets etc., and, besides, as Alexey has mentioned above, everything hurts (and I want to add that there has always been something that spoilt the health), so, that's in our powers to pay a little bit more attention to our physical condition, have some rest and work with electronics more carefully.
