An article about social behaviour

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/environment/conservation/11229345/The-bins-are-overflowing-in-litterbug-Britain.html
I've chosen the article, that is called 'The bins are overflowing in litterbug Britain'. It was published in the Telegraph by Robert Colvile. This article covers an updating problem of  the environmental pollution, which is caused by people, who leave rubbish in the streets of Great Britain, who don't  tend to be polite to their country.
When we have a first look at this article, we see an unpleasant picture of heap of the rubbish in the street. The author emphasizes that the rubbish is everywhere: at the bus stops, in the streets, in the buses.  Robert Colvile also gives us statistics, that the amount of what people throw away 'has grown by 500 per cent '. It's a disaster, even when British campaign 'Keep Britain Tidy'  tries to save Britain from litter, 'fly-tipping has spiked dramatically, with the total of 852,000 incidents in 2013/14 representing a 20 per cent increase within a year'. One of the main problem, that causes street littering, is appearing of the fast food.  Baroness Bakewell believes that street eating makes people just to throw the food wrappers, wherever they are. Also, Phil Barton, chief executive of Keep Britain Tidy, adds, that rubbished streets have an atmosphere of poverty. What about the litterers, statistics shows us, that about 27 per cent of people relieves themselves, when they throw the rubbish in the streets, that this kind of litter may be biodegradable. About a half of British people faces the problem, where they can leave their wrappers, when there is a lack of bins, so they throw them in the streets. But on the other hand, when a person who notices, that the street is clean, tries to find a bin and leaves the place as clean as it was.To find out the cause of such people behaviour,  Camden Council and Keep Britain Tidy removed the bins and clean-up crews from just one side of a busy London street. In about 10 hours it was full of rubbish, even though there were bins on the other side of the street.
I think this problem is very urgent nowadays. In the century of smart devices, we behave like barbarians. Moreover, not only Britain is sinking in the rubbish, for example, streets, houses, bus stops, even parks sometimes are full of litters in Russia. It' s very sad to admit the fact, that  fines, signs, lectures don't affect on some people. However, I think, now people try to understand, that it's more pleasant to live in clean, beautiful town. For example, in Tula I saw piles of rubbish everywhere, but then bins were placed and I noticed, that my town is going to be clean. I know, that there are also some competitions are held, in which people paint their houses, plant flowers there. I believe, it will be nice, if there will be more such competitions. But does it help people to get rid of the habit to litter or is it just a temporary decision of this problem? What are ways out people should make up and will it work?

  1. Very interesting article about our vital daily problem - rubbish on our streets.
I do agree with both the author's opinion and your one, Kristina.
I was surprised when I knew that these things are happening in Great Britain. Because we all used to think (our stereotypes) that European countries are very clean - but that's not true as we can see. People are people and breeding is breeding.
I think that the key-factor in saving our streets clean is to educate children at kindergarten and schools not to litter. And we shoul teach them every day so that they knew that littereing is very bad.
But it;s easier to say than do. That's why the most possible variant is to put refuse bins every 100-200 metres. Maybe, it will help.

  2. First of all, thank you for a very interesting article choice, Kristina! The problem, as it has already been stated, is a very actual (and essential) one. Being in Germany at the moment, I'm also trying to figure out how people tend to get rid of their rubbish right at the public places. Frankly saying, the city is not as clean as I have thought it must be; nevertheless, most of the rubbish is being thrown out not by the Germans, but by the immigrants from the less wealthy countries. Should we take this point into an account?
I would also agree on the idea that more waste collectors reduce the number of rubbish pieces at the streets. Besides, a very important goal is to persuade everyone and everywhere that it's right and very nice at the same time to see the clean streets without any hideous packages and wraps.

  3. Kristina, thanks, very interesting article. I agree with your opinion, too. And I think solution to this problem depends on each of us. We must not leave to indifferent, should participate in its decision. And to my mind, only a collective approach can make a difference for the better.

  4. I have rather pessimistic view on this problem, maybe realistic one, unfortunately. Some days ago I watched the documentary about pollution and the predictions are disappointing. Technological progress opens to us new opportunies but at the same time it brings us closer to the disaster. One average citizen throws about 5 tons of rubbish a year. It's shocking imaging how much tons is thrown by all people on the Earth. And now the litter needs hundreds years to be utilized, the nature can't manage with our present-day rubbish.
Nowadays Sweden has the progress in the fight against waste. In this country it is learned how to recycle it. They even buy the rubbish of other countries. This achievent in the field of ecology became possible due to residents of Sweden who care about the surrounding environment.
I think we should start to think not only about our real time but also about future, not only about ourselves but also about the place we live in.

  5. The article touches everlasting problem of rubbish. Actually, it hasn't given me something new, but makes me think once again about our environment. I liked the experiment with removing bins in London, it really shows us that sometimes we “behave like barbarians”, as you’ve said. And I don’t know if people can be re-educated. I notice people, who leave their litter on the streets when there is a bin right near them, practically every day. In addition, that’s not the problem of our country, it’s the problem of the whole world and the whole society. In your article GB is described, and I’ve been in Italy, and I was shocked having seen such quantity of rubbish around the Colosseum! But, in fact, there were practically no litter bins around. So, as for me, I try to throw out my rubbish when I see a bin, when there is no bin, I’m made to leave it on the street.
If there were more litter bins, people will get accustomed to put their garbage there. The government should think more about it.

  6. The article deals with a very essential problem - environmental problem. We are sinking in the rubbish and the blame is on us. Our planet is calling for help! Shame on us. Cause lots of people just throw litter away on the streets witout scruple. We pollute the place where we live, even animals don't do like this! If we really want to live in a clean wonderful world and to breathe fresh air then we should rethink our behaviour, start with ourselves and encourage people around by our example. All together we can save our town, country, planet from tons of rubbish.

  7. It was interesting to read this article. I agree with Alexei that we should teach children not to litter. It is easier to explain them then to teach grown-up people, who used to litter. Also I think, government should control it. Perhaps wipers should clean the streets oftener.
